Reflecting on my grandfather, I often describe him in a grandiose manner, akin to the introductions in "Game of Thrones." He embodied the essence of sensitivity and gentleness, often moved to tears by the passing of his beloved baseball players. He nurtured my curiosity, cultivating cotton, peanuts, and enormous sunflowers in his garden, and even crafted a pond in his backyard long before it was fashionable. A builder of birdhouses, he would diligently protect them from squirrels, creating a natural oasis in the city for me.

This sense of wonder and the ability to see the world through various lenses, traits that now aid me in my profession, I owe to him. His stories, particularly one from his Navy service during World War II, unknowingly laid the groundwork for my understanding of codependency. Aboard the USS Lansdale in the Mediterranean, he survived a harrowing ordeal on April 20, 1944, when German torpedoes struck. As a radioman, he announced the ship's abandonment amidst chaos and darkness, with his life preserver failing to inflate. Miraculously, he was saved by a fellow sailor who offered his own life preserver.

This experience, paralleling the challenges of codependency, highlights the importance of self-preservation, even in the most dire circumstances. My grandfather's story serves as a metaphor for the difficult choices we face in life, whether in relationships, careers, or personal habits. It's in these tough decisions where growth and self-care emerge.

In honoring my grandfather, and his influence on my life, I extend my gratitude to the listeners of Emotional Badass. Your support, through sharing the podcast and participating in our community, has been invaluable.
